Natural Gas and Renewable Energy Working Together for a Cleaner Tomorrow
Every April 22, Earth Day gives us a moment to step back and think about how we care for the world we all share. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is a call for unity, asking us to come together and support renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and tidal.
At Coterra Energy, we’re proud to be part of that conversation. As one of the country’s leading producers of natural gas and oil, we recognize the responsibility of meeting the world’s energy needs. We also know that the path to a lower-carbon future is not a straight line—and it’s not something any one source of energy can tackle alone. We must find ways for our energy resources to complement each other.
The Role of Natural Gas in a Cleaner Energy Mix
There’s no question that wind and solar are going to play a major role in the energy transition. But they can’t do it all on their own—at least not yet. Because renewables depend on weather conditions, we need reliable sources of power to fill in the gaps when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. That’s where natural gas comes in.
Natural gas is flexible, efficient, and significantly cleaner than coal. It can ramp up quickly to support the grid and make room for more renewables. In fact, natural gas has already helped drive down U.S. emissions by replacing higher-emitting sources in the power sector. It’s not about either/or—it’s about working together.
Looking Ahead: Innovation and Lower Emissions
We’re also investing in technologies that make our operations cleaner and more efficient—from reducing methane emissions to exploring carbon capture and future fuels like hydrogen. We know the world is changing, and we’re changing with it.
“Earth Day is a reminder that collaboration is key,” said Bill desRosiers, External Affairs Manager at Coterra Energy. “Natural gas and renewables aren’t competing forces—they’re complementary tools that can work together to deliver cleaner and more reliable energy. We’re proud to be part of the solution and committed to doing our part for the planet.”
Earth Day isn’t just about big ideas. It’s about taking real steps, every day, to build a better future. We believe natural gas and renewables can—and must—work side by side to get us there.
